Pricing depends on lots of stuff but generally I'll teach your group (up to 10 people) for $199. There is an additional fee for materials and that varies based on the subject you choose and the take home project we'll do but can be as low as $25. I also charge travel fees if travel will take more than 20 minutes from my home in Milton, Ma. If you have a larger group, no problem, let's discuss how to make Nature Is Our Teacher work for you!
I totally tailor my program to my audience so for adults, about an hour is the norm and for the littlest it would be about half that (but with time for exploring artifacts and manipulatives that I'll bring, they'll have something entertaining to do for about an hour as well).
Connecting to nature can be part of our personal mental health upkeep. Sleep hygiene? How about mental health hygiene? Ever heard of forest bathing? Noticing what is around us can help us focus outward instead of inward especially when those inward feelings are difficult. Feeling like we are part of something bigger assures us that there is meaning in our lives. Being curious, being in awe of something are powerful skills we can cultivate. Let me spark this interest for you and you'll have this gift for the rest of your life!
Our interest in building a relationship with nature comes from a place where this connection can be an aid to mental health and well being. Studies show that we (modern day Americans) don’t get outside, spend so much time on screens and at the same time, rates of depression, anxiety and isolation are soaring. A class with Nature Is Our Teacher is a small step towards igniting an interest in something that is free and open to all, accessible in a multitude of ways and may be integral to discovering something new about ourselves and each other.

More data coming soon. I do love good data!
We won't be sitting and chanting ohm, but we will pause to take some cleansing breaths, some centering breaths and try a technique or two to help build a habit of concentrating on our breath.
I'll come to you at your library, birthday party venue, back yard, community center, etc or do a virtual lesson, if necessary. Virtual programs will be adapted and may not end up including identical take aways. It is best - but not necessary - to have access to an outside location when possible for at least some of the program.
This programming is for everyone. All ages! Babies with caretakers, kids, adults and seniors.
You'll be working with Nature Is Our Teacher (NIOT) owner Lisa for the entire process. This is a one person show and I bring knowledge, enthusiasm, experience and kindness with me always.
I have been a life-long learner and nature explorer and I want to share my enthusiasm with your group! I have a BA in psychology from Holy Cross and an MBA from UMASS, Boston. I have more than a decade under my belt as a mom to an 11 yr old daughter and a 6 year old son. I have volunteered at their school's Outdoor Classroom and also at our public library's Friends board of directors where 2023 was a hugely successful year of programming around gardening and sustainability called Milton Grows. I studied Mental Health First Aid and completed a course from Teaching in Nature's Classroom by Rooted, Life Lab, and the Wisconsin School Garden Network.
I thought you'd never ask! In the fall, Leaves, Seeds and Seed Pods, Using Our 5 Senses in the Backyard, Pumpkin Discovery, Blooms from Bulbs. See photos at the bottom of this page. I'm open to developing a class that works for your group and location, too.
Oh yes, some silliness, for sure! Life is better with kindness, silliness and a little dirt under your nails or sand between your toes.
Fall Class Options
Leaves - use leaf shape, color, size and texture to identify a plant. Leaf rubbing, leaf painting and/or leaf collage
Seeds and Seed Pods - seeds vary hugely in size and some develop in amazing containers. Save seeds to plant in the future and/or make a seed mosaic.
Fall Class Options Continued
Blooms and Blubs - fall is the right time to plant tulips and daffodils that will appear in spring. Dissect a bulb and label the plant parts.
Pumpkin Discovery - We all love seeing these appear as decorations in the fall. What is the inside like? What varieties are there? How were they used in the past? Save their seeds to grow your own.
